One-legged figures are representations of important ancestral spirits. They are used in conjunction with decorated male dancers during the initiation of young men. The sculptures are used to prod the boys during the course of assembling them for rituals. The figures are later shown to the boys again several years later when they undergo the last phase of initiation before marriage. (Smidt 1990: 29-31)
